Growing Up — Guide 8

Clear Steps for Changing Bodies.

Puberty and growing independence can bring a completely new set of questions for families. Changes in body odor, hygiene, menstruation, erections, body hair, acne, privacy, emotions, personal boundaries, and self-care can already feel complicated—and children with autism, ADHD, developmental disabilities, sensory differences, or communication needs may need these changes explained in a much more direct and predictable way.

Growing Up gives parents and caregivers a respectful, sensory-considerate way to teach those skills before they become a crisis or an embarrassing situation.

Instead of treating puberty as one big uncomfortable conversation, this guide encourages families to break it into small lessons that can be taught, practiced, repeated, and adjusted as the young person develops. It helps parents use clear body language, correct terminology, visual routines, simple scripts, and real choices while protecting the young person’s privacy, autonomy, and dignity.

Families are introduced to the GROW Method: Get ahead of changes, Repeat with visuals, Offer real choices, and Watch and adjust. The focus is not on forcing independence before a child is ready. It is on helping that young person participate in their own care as safely and confidently as possible.

The guide addresses everyday hygiene routines, deodorant, bathing, clean clothing, sensory discomfort, privacy, asking permission before touching, body changes, menstruation preparation, and ways to communicate when something feels uncomfortable or overwhelming.

And because sensory discomfort can sometimes look like refusal, parents are encouraged to ask why a routine is difficult before assuming the child is simply being uncooperative. Something as simple as water temperature, a strong-smelling product, a loud bathroom fan, a rough towel, or an uncomfortable toothbrush can completely change the experience.

Most importantly, Growing Up reminds families that children and teens deserve accurate information about their bodies, meaningful choices, privacy, safety, and respect—whether they become fully independent or continue needing support into adulthood.

Prepare early. Teach clearly. Protect dignity. Build confidence for what comes next. 🌱💜
